exulans, exulant, exulate

(Latin: to go into exile; to be in exile, banishment)

The spelling exsul, exsilium is due to a confusion with Latin solum, "soil", from which the ancients derived exilium and exul, but with which these words have nothing in common. Nor is there any connection betweein Latin exilium and exsilire, "to spring forth".
